Voice quality as a pitch-range indicator

چکیده
Pitch perception plays a central role in processing speech prosody. Since f0 varies from speaker to speaker and from context to context, effective pitch-range normalization is thus important to uncover intended linguistic pitch targets. It has also been speculated that voice quality may play a role in pitch-range perception. Our previous study demonstrated that spectral balance indeed effectively affected the perception of pitch height: “tense voice”, implemented as stimuli with spectral balance tilted towards higher frequency, was perceived as higher in pitch. Our previous study used nonspeech stimuli, raising the possibility that listeners might not be in the speech mode; this current study therefore replicates the previous experiment using speech stimuli resynthesized with the same range of f0 contours and a similar spectral manipulation, and the same forced-choice pitch classification experiment with four spectral conditions. The results are consistent with our previous experiment: the pitch classification function was significantly shifted by differences in spectral balance. Listeners generally hear higher pitches when the spectrum includes more high-frequency energy (i.e., tenser phonation). Moreover, there is a salient perceptual bias: When the second peak is tenser, the effect is stronger. These new results further support the hypothesis that voice quality cues are strong indicators of pitch-range.

Pitch-Range Perception: The Dynamic Interaction Between Voice Quality and Fundamental Frequency
Effective pitch-range normalization is important to uncover intended linguistic pitch targets in continuous speech. Our previous study demonstrated that voice quality plays a role in pitch-range perception: “tense voice”, implemented as stimuli with spectral balance tilted towards higher frequency, was perceived as higher in pitch. This psychoacoustic effect is consistent with the co-variation ...
متن کاملBody size projection by voice quality in emotional speech—Evidence from Mandarin Chinese
This study attempts to extend the line of research on using body size projection theory to account for emotional speech. It is predicted by the theory that anger is expressed by projecting a large body size with low pitch, rough voice and long vocal tract; happiness is expressed by projecting a small body size with high pitch, breathy voice and short vocal tract. Ten native speakers of Mandarin...

Introduction: habitual pitch perception associated with the mean fundamental frequency of speech. In the clinical evaluation referred to this issue is dealt with in the normal range for a person whether he is a habitual pitch. A common feature in many of the abnormal pitch of voice disorders, the assessment of habitual pitch and factors affecting it, may help scientists to determine the exist...
متن کاملPerception of pitch location within a speaker's range: fundamental frequency, voice quality and speaker sex.
How are listeners able to identify whether the pitch of a brief isolated sample of an unknown voice is high or low in the overall pitch range of that speaker? Does the speaker's voice quality convey crucial information about pitch level? Results and statistical models of two experiments that provide answers to these questions are presented. First, listeners rated the pitch levels of vowels take...
متن کاملPitch strength of normal and dysphonic voices.
Two sounds with the same pitch may vary from each other based on saliency of their pitch sensation. This perceptual attribute is called "pitch strength." The study of voice pitch strength may be important in quantifying of normal and pathological qualities. The present study investigated how pitch strength varies across normal and dysphonic voices. A set of voices (vowel /a/) selected from the ...
